Acne. Is caring for it a sore spot?

Many of us, from teens to adults, deal with acne. In teens, the root cause is usually fluctuating hormones, while in adults, acne issues can be caused by anything from diet to pollution to stress. Acne prone skin may also experience excess oil, a shiny complexion mixed with bumps, whiteheads or blackheads.

Keep it Simple

The first instinct might be to find skincare with high levels of antibacterial ingredients and acids. Harsh scrubs and stronger formulas can actually make skin drier and more irritated. It can also disturb the acid mantle, the protective layer of our skin made up of sweat oil and good bacteria.

Skin should be cleansed twice a day, in the morning and before you go to sleep. Start with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Opt for a purifying gel cleanser, one with antibacterial alpha hydroxy acids or lactic acid will help keep that oil at bay and zap those zits. And, gel formulas tend to have a low foaming capacity. You’re still cleansing without any excess lather that may be too harsh for your type of skin or acne issues.

Avoid Exfoliants

Stay away from exfoliating cleansers. These may only exacerbate skin with redness and inflammation. If blemishes are more apparent, try a spot treatment with low levels of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you find that this routine doesn’t improve the overall appearance of your skin or it seems to be getting worse, it is always good to see a reputable dermatologist.

Clean Your Surroundings

A few other helpful reminders, keep your hands, as well as your hair, off your face. Natural oils from hands and hair can transfer onto your skin which can contribute to more irritation and blocked pores. Showering before cleansing your face will loosen dirt and impurities. Let the warm stream work on opening your pores so you can get a deeper clean. If you love to workout, you might want to cleanse again. Keep your phone surface and earpiece wires clean. Change your pillowcases more frequently and drink that water!

The ultimate treatment can be getting to the root of your acne issues. Skin is affected by your lifestyle, your diet, your genetics, and your stress level. Choosing more personalized skincare, that focuses on and can be formulated for your individual skin type and acne issues, might be the most effective path to finding the best facial cleanser for acne.
