How To Wash Your Face If You Have Oily Skin

Are you using a little elbow grease in your oily skin care routine? Don’t.

When you have oily skin, rise and shine takes on a whole new meaning. First instinct? Scrub that oil away and use the strongest products to dry it out. Well, don’t. Doing this can actually damage your skin and may even produce more oil.

We have all have a protective layer on our skin known as the acid mantle that consists of a balanced amount of oil and good bacteria to keep pollutants and toxins from penetrating our skin. When skin produces too much oil, it clogs pores and makes skin appear shiny.

Oily skin can be caused by genetics, hormones, where you live, what you eat or by using the wrong products. It’s key to find the best products for your individual oily type and issues. The objective is to treat it with products that will balance your skin without leaving it tight and dried out.

Your skincare regimen should consist of a gentle face wash and lightweight day and night moisturizers. It may be tempting, but avoid harsh scrubs and exfoliators or any high alcohol content products. Using these only will be counter intuitive. Choose a gentle, oil-free facial cleanser and lotions that are non-comedogenic and won’t clog pores. Face washes and masks with natural, clay-based ingredients will also help absorb excess oil.

A daily, and nightly, care routine should obviously start with cleansing. Depending on your level of oiliness, a face wash with a low percentage of glycolic or salicylic acid. will unclog pores and leave skin feeling comfortable and refreshed. For a more effective and deeper clean, let your pores open up in a warm, steamy shower prior to cleansing.

Don’t skip the moisturizer. Contrary to the myth, using a moisturizer will not add oil to your skin. Not using one leaves skin vulnerable to exposure and dehydration and this can ultimately lead to signs of aging that will become more apparent.

Apply a lightweight, oil-free, mattifying (matte finish) day moisturizer with an SPF level of 30 or higher. This will help keep the shine to a minimum while shielding skin from environmental factors that can affect it. Repeat this in the evening, using a light lotion or gel-cream formulated specifically for night.

And, your mother was right. Keep your hands, as well as your hair, off your face. Natural oils from both can transfer onto your skin which can clog pores and produce more oil. Clean your phone surface and earpiece wires often, as they touch your skin several times throughout the day. Change pillowcases more frequently as they will transfer oil and dirt back and forth.
